DAVID Bentley laid claims for an England recall after firing Rovers on their way through to the first round of the UEFA Cup.
After a frustrating first half were MyPa's goalkeeping captain Janne Korhonen kept Rovers at bay, it was David Bentley who finally broke the deadlock minutes after the restart with a sweetly struck volley.
Leading 1-0 from the first leg, Rovers were always in control, the only surprise being that it took until the 91st minute before they doubled their lead, Bentley's corner kick was nodded on by Derbyshire before Jason Roberts back-heeled the ball into the back of the net.
With an important Premier League match against Manchester City to look forward to on Sunday, Mark Hughes took the opportunity to rest some of his big guns for the UEFA Cup match.
Out of the 18 went Christopher Samba, Robbie Savage and Benni McCarthy, whilst David Dunn and Roque Santa Cruz had to settle for a place on the bench. Those five changes allowed Ryan Nelsen to return to captain the side at the heart of the defence, whilst Tugay, Mokoena and Roberts also got starts. Joining Roberts up front was Maceo Rigters, the Dutchman making his first start in a blue and white shirt since his £350,000 move from NAC Breda in July.
Like the encounter at the Anjalankoski Stadium a fortnight ago, it was Rovers who went straight at their Finish opponents from the off. Early pressure from the home side saw Rovers almost take the lead on ten minutes when Tugay threaded a slide-rule pass through to Brett Emerton in space in the penalty area. The Australian international hit the ball across goal towards the far post where Jason Roberts was lurking, he got a touch on the ball but it was Roberts who ended up in the back of the net and not the football.
Rovers continued to be frustrated in front of goal, Mokoena went close with a snapshot from the edge of the box but Janne Korhonen made a smart save, diving low to his left, then on 15 minutes Roberts did likewise, but again the MyPa captain kept his side in the game.
With MyPa operating just the lone striker, it meant there was little room for Rovers to operate, Tugay pressed and probed, Bentley and Emerton worked hard on the flanks, but without little joy.
Past the half hour mark and Rovers got their second wind, David Bentley flashed a left-footed effort narrowly wide, then Maceo Rigters had his first sight of goal, exchanging passes with Roberts, the Dutchman fired just wide of the far post.
Rovers were rarely troubled at the back, a trio of corner kicks that they seemed in no rush to take was the best that MyPa could, whilst at the other end it was their captain Janne Korhonen who kept them in the game with a series of stunning saves.
David Bentley hit a deep cross to Morten Gamst Pedersen who in turn nodded down for Rigters, the ball ran to Roberts but from six yards out his shot was saved at point-blank range by Korhonen.
Moments later from a Pedersen left wing cross it was Aaron Mokoena's turn to test the 'keeper as he somehow kept out the South African's header.
Rovers started the second half exactly as they'd ended the first - camped in their opponents half. A couple of dangerous balls in from the flanks serving the intention that Rovers were keen on getting the tie settled as early as possible.
And so it proved to be, when on 48 minutes the deadlock was finally broken. Maceo Rigters took the ball into the area before spreading it out wide to Morten Gamst Pedersen, the Norwegian clipped the ball over to the opposite side of the area where David Bentley was lurking to volley home with a sumptuous left-footed strike.
The home side continued to lay siege to the MyPa goal, Mokoena fired wide, Bentley went close with a curling free-kick, then Andre Ooijer perhaps connected too well with Pedersen's free-kick, the Dutchman seeing his header go narrowly over the bar.
MyPa offered little going forward, a shot from distance from Tuomas Kuparinen that warmed Brad Friedel's gloves, whilst sub Puhakainen saw a near-post effort blocked by the big American.
Jason Roberts flashed an effort narrowly over the bar, it certainly wasn't the former Wigan striker's night, when Korhonen couldn't hold Pedersen's driven free-kick, the ball looped over the advancing Roberts and away from danger.
With the tie coasting to its inevitable conclusion, Mark Hughes was able to give a senior debut to Swedish under 19 international Martin Olsson, the left-back looked lively in the final quarter hour.
Rovers continued to probe in the final ten minutes, Tugay and Bentley were particularly impressive, Derbyshire went close with a cheeky effort from a tight angle, the ball just bouncing wide of goal.
The final act on the night fell to Jason Roberts, thwarted so often during the ninety, he finally got the goal his work rate deserved when with the last kick of the game he converted David Bentley's corner kick, back heeling the ball over the line.
Overall it was a comfortable night for Rovers. The 13,490 in attendance didn't see the glut of goals that they may have hoped for, but it was another polished and professional performance from a Mark Hughes side that wants to go far in this competition.
It was perhaps apt that the fans chanted 'Bentley for England' as the man-of-the-match left the pitch to a standing ovation at the end of the match.
