Triple deal delight
BLACKBURN Rovers are delighted to announce that defenders Stephen Warnock and Martin Olsson and striker Matt Derbyshire have all signed new deals with the club.
All three players have signed new contracts that will keep them at the Ewood Park club until the summer of 2012.
Since his move from Liverpool for just over a million pounds back in January 2007, Warnock has been a huge hit both on and off the pitch and the 26-year-old had no hesitation in signing a new deal.
"It's fantastic, I just think the club offering me a new deal is a reward for what I've been doing and obviously I've been doing something right," said Warnock, who won the Unsung Hero Award at the Annual Awards Evening on Sunday evening.
"It is a massive thing to be offered a new contract and when you see how the club is progressing and how things are going then you want to be part of that, and things are going well so I can't really argue."
Plagued with injury troubles during his stop-start career at Anfield, Warnock has been a virtual ever-present for Mark Hughes' side since his arrival, and having grabbed the opportunity with both hands, Stephen is reaping the rewards.
"I played a full season when I was on loan at Coventry and I kept myself fit and I think that is what happens when you are playing week-in week-out you seem to keep your fitness a lot better and you stay away from injuries.
"When I was at Liverpool I was in and out of the squad and in and out of the team and it was hard to take because you think you are good enough to play, but coming here the manager has given me a great opportunity and I like to think that I've taken it."
Also signing a new deal with the club is fellow left-back and Young Player of the Year Martin Olsson. Signed just over two years ago from Swedish side Hogaborgs BK, the young defender made his second Premier League appearance as a substitute in the 3-1 victory over Derby County on Saturday.
And with his first senior contract under his belt the Swedish under 19 international is hoping next season will bring more first team appearances.
"I'm very happy to have signed a new deal, it is what I've been working hard for, to get a contract with the first team," said Olsson.
"I've been doing well, I've been working hard, I came here two years ago and now I'm delighted to get that first team contract.
"I've been in the squad a lot of times and on the bench too in some games, my aim for next season is to be more involved and to play a few more first team games. I'm learning all the time every day in training, and I'm delighted that the manager has shown this faith in me."
Last but by no means least is striker Matt Derbyshire, who has also signed a new deal until 2012. The Blackburn-born striker's rise shows no sign of abating as he continues to impress both for club and country.
Now one of the veterans at England under 21 level, Derbyshire was "ecstatic" at signing a new contract with his boyhood club.
